The Meteorological
office Guwahati
was established at Guwahati Airport on
23-07-1949.
It was upgraded to Meteorological Centre on
25-03-1974
and further upgraded to RMC on
01-04-1997.
There are 17 field offices under administrative,
technical and financial control of RMC Guwahati.

In addition to analogue system of forecasting, RMC
Guwahati is equipped with
Synergy system of weather
forecasting tool received from Meteo France
International (MFI) and commissioned on 18/2/2010. High
speed computing system (HPCS) is also made operational
for regional modeling.
Integrated Automatic Aviation Meteorological System
(IAAMS) has already been installed at Guwahati Airport
under Aviation Meteorological Office, Guwahati and
commissioned on 05-01-2010.
Polar Orbiting Satellite
receiving system (MetOp, Aqua, Terra, NOAA series)is
installed through ESSESS, Australia and made
operational. Automatic
weather stations (AWS),
Automatic Rain gauges
(ARG),
GPS in the entire NE-region are installed in
phased manner, Doppler
weather Radar (DWR) at Agartala is
operational. GPS sonde
has already been functioning at Meteorological office Mohanbari. DWR at Mohanbari (Dibrugarh)
is being commissioned shortly. A New Automatic message switching system (AMSS) is likely to be installed at RMC
Guwahati office shortly. All above systems under modernization of IMD.
In addition to above, High speed data circuit (HSDC), V-SAT, DMDD (Digital Meteorological Data dissemination),
and IVRS are functioning at RMC Guwahati office.
